Walking is one of our most important movements. It’s one we don’t do nearly as much as we need to. And because of our sedentary lifestyles, when we do walk we don’t do a very good job of it.
What Stretches To Do Before Walking
I put together a quick 5 stretch routine you can do before heading out for a walk. This routine will help you improve your range of motion so you can walk more efficiently and more correctly.
Because our hips are so tight, we tend to use our lower backs to walk. The lower back should mostly be stabilizing your spine while the largest muscles in your body handle the walking load.
Making sure you have proper ankle range of motion is important too. Without enough ankle movement, you cannot properly extend your leg behind you to push off. Without this extension, you end up just picking up your foot and sort of plopping it in front of you.
I created this stretch routine to help open your hips and also unlock your ankles. Try it out and see how much more effortless walking feels!
